People rarely change their behavior because you’ve criticized them. But they often change it because of the way you’ve lived your life. Don’t be a judge of others. Don’t condemn with words. Don’t condemn with a glance. Ultimately, do not judge even in your thoughts. The way we act lends weight to what we expect from others.

That’s why sometimes just one thing is enough: Be what you want to see in others. In the small circle of people we work with, a consistent example can help ensure that the rule we preach is actually followed. Quietly. Consistently. Without the need to persuade. Awaken others’ potential.

Bring out the best in them.

If we seek attentive listening, respect for agreements, and accountability for mistakes, it’s worth first demonstrating what that looks like in our own behavior.
