A job can end, a company can go under, and a position can change. When we tie our entire identity to what we’re currently doing or have, such a loss also raises the question of how we’ll see ourselves afterward.

Knowledge, discipline, and experience can help us start over. This doesn’t mean recovery will be easy, nor that loss won’t change us. But they give us something to lean on when our old role vanishes.

That’s why it’s worth building relationships, skills, and interests that aren’t tied solely to work. That way we have people who care about us even without a job title, things we’re good at, and reasons not to measure our days solely by immediate results.

We don’t have to wait until we lose it to ask who we are without what currently makes us important.
