A person can admit a bad decision and still have the right to move on. The past should be understood, especially if others have suffered the consequences, but it does not have to be the only measure of everything we do in the future.
Another person's reproach does not help much if it permanently brings us back to the same moment. It is more useful to clearly see the responsibility, fix what we can and decide how to not repeat a similar mistake.
A new attempt requires more than a promise to be different. Actions that demonstrate this are needed, patience towards people whose trust has been broken and a willingness to live with part of the consequences.
