You’ve achieved a good result and want to share your joy. Then you run into a colleague who isn’t doing so well right now. They congratulate you, but you keep rambling on about your successes without asking how they’re doing.
Celebrating success isn’t the problem. But a conversation with another person isn’t the same as a performance in front of an audience. If we already know they’re going through a difficult time, it’s worth making room for what they’re going through as well.
We don’t have to hide the good news. We can share it without making comparisons, and then listen to the other person. Sometimes it’s enough to simply stop talking only about ourselves.
That is where balance in a relationship comes in—not in how much we downplay our own success, but in whether we take the time to acknowledge the other person alongside it.
