In an unpleasant conversation, we are often expected to give a quick answer. As if it is more important to maintain the rhythm of the discussion than to understand what was just said. A person who pauses easily gets someone else's interpretation of their silence.

The pause gives us space to listen to the end and choose the words we will stand behind even when the conversation is over. Not every provocation deserves to determine our tone. The speed of the response in itself says little about its value.

And silence has its limit. If there is a need to deny a request, stop an insult, or report a problem, the answer must become clear. The point of a pause is to decide what to say, not to leave an unpleasant conversation unfinished forever.
