Constant comparison with others easily turns an ordinary day into an assessment of one's own shortcomings. Other people's appearance, job or recognition then become a yardstick against which we lose in advance, even though we only know a part of their life.
It is more useful to separate what we want to change from what we are trying to change for the approval of others. The skill we want to develop and the role we are trying to fit into are not the same kind of commitment.
Self-care can start with a modest choice that meets our real needs. We don't have to earn the right to be accepted every day. We can work on ourselves without constantly proving our worth.
