We don’t just walk into a store with money. We also bring expectations about what we need, what we should have, and how others will view us if we buy something.

That gaze can influence our choices, but it does not determine our income. A person with a low salary does not become wealthy simply by changing their way of thinking.

What matters is the reason for the purchase. Does the item meet a real need? Can we afford it? Or are we buying proof that we’ve reached the place we think we should be?

Saving, spending, and increasing income are not the same issues. For each, we need to understand the specific circumstances, rather than reducing our attitude toward money to a matter of fear or courage.

We cannot always change the price on the label. We can better understand the judgment we make before agreeing to pay it.
