There is a paradox that often occurs among highly intelligent people. Their greatest strength sometimes becomes their greatest weakness. Intelligence can open many doors. But the ego can close even more. When a person becomes convinced that they know enough, they stop asking questions. When they stop asking questions, they stop learning. And the moment you stop learning is the moment you start falling behind.
The ego has another curious trait: it values being right more than it values making progress. That is why intelligent people sometimes invest great energy defending their opinions instead of exploring whether a better solution exists.
A healthy attitude toward knowledge also includes a willingness to question what we’re certain of. The more we learn, the more we realize how much we still do not know.
Perhaps this is where one of the most important lessons of personal growth lies.
Intelligence opens doors. The willingness to listen to a better explanation helps ensure that this opportunity is not left untapped.
