The problem disappeared from the meeting in three seconds. Nobody solved it. We simply called it a challenge.

That word sounds better in a meeting. But the client whose delivery is late does not care what we call the delay. The person who has been saying for weeks that they cannot manage alone feels no better because we are discussing “organisational challenges”.

We can choose our words carefully. We should also choose the moment to act carefully. A challenge left alone long enough usually changes its name.

Then we call it a crisis.
