A big goal can give direction, but it says little about what needs to be done this week. If we constantly measure daily progress by the distance from the final result, the effort can seem insignificant.

That's why we need to determine a smaller commitment that we can complete with the current time and resources. It should be demanding enough to change something, and clear enough for us to know when it is done.

Such a plan does not require giving up ambition. It allows us to check it through specific work and adapt it to real circumstances. If smaller steps are regularly missed, the deadline, scope, or assumption on which the goal rests may need to be changed.
