Sometimes we are stopped by a conclusion about what will happen before we have checked the possibility. We expect a rejection, a mistake or a disappointment, so we give up on a conversation that hasn't even started yet.

Such apprehension may have a basis in earlier experience. Still, we should examine how the situation differs today. What data do we have, and what are we just assuming? Is there a small step we can take to learn more?

We cannot eliminate all fear by deciding to think positively. We can take it seriously without automatically accepting its conclusion. Checking leaves us more space than arguing with a possible outcome that we don't yet know.
