A title, income and public recognition can be valuable and well-deserved. The problem arises when we evaluate our entire worth as a person through them, so any change in position begins to look like a loss of identity.
Work and circumstances change. Our knowledge, the way we treat people and the relationships we build can endure differently, although they also need to be nurtured. It is useful to know what to rely on when external confirmation is lacking.
We can enjoy what we have achieved without having to constantly prove who we are with those things. Such a relationship leaves more freedom to admit a mistake, change jobs or choose something that brings less attention.
