For a long time, we see our parents through a child’s eyes. We remember what they did not allow, words that upset us and boundaries we did not understand.
When we begin carrying our own responsibilities, we see some of their decisions differently. In what we took for granted, we recognize care, sacrifice and sleepless nights. That does not mean they were always right or that every relationship is the same.
That is why I dedicated my book to my parents. As I grew older, I understood more of what I had not been able to see before.
If we can still talk to them, it is worth asking what things were like for them, instead of drawing every conclusion from our own memories. We may not agree on everything. But we may learn something they never told us on their own.
