We spend a lot of energy trying to change someone else's decision. We repeat the argument, ask for a better explanation, and wait for the other person to finally see what seems obvious to us. During that time, our own choices are left aside.
Influence exists through conversation, agreement and joint work. Its limit becomes clear when the other person has all the information and still chooses differently. Then another repetition of the same conversation often only prolongs the exhaustion.
Our actions, boundaries and the decision as to how much we will participate in such a relationship remain up to us. The right to seek a fair deal remains. There remains the possibility of withdrawing from what keeps disappointing us. We cannot put our own lives on hold until someone else changes their mind.
