When I look at big problems, it’s easy to feel that my work can’t change anything. Countries, institutions, and conflicts operate far removed from what I can directly influence.
Yet there is a smaller arena where my choices matter: the company I run, the people I work with, and the relationships I nurture. Here it becomes clear whether I kept my word, took responsibility, and solved the problems within my power.
A well-run small system is no substitute for good institutions. But bad institutions are no reason for me to accept in my own work the very disorder I complain about.
I can’t fix the whole world. I can try to make the things I’m responsible for clearer, fairer, and more reliable. That’s a concrete enough task to start with.
