Sometimes you simply made a mistake. You didn’t know enough, you trusted the wrong people, you rushed, or you were too late. But sometimes you did almost everything right, and yet it still wasn’t enough.

That’s hard to accept. When you know where you went wrong, there’s something you can fix. When the result doesn’t come despite serious effort, the answer isn’t always so clear.

That’s when a fear of trusting again, taking action, or investing yourself in something that might not succeed can set in. The message that you have to get back up right away and show strength doesn’t always help.

Not every defeat has to teach us a big lesson right away. Sometimes it takes time to understand what was within our control, what wasn’t, and what we’d do differently next time. Sometimes, even after that, we’ll still be left without an answer that satisfies us.

It’s important to me that we don’t start to look down on effort or integrity just because of one bad outcome. We can move forward more slowly, without feeling the need to immediately turn the experience into a success story.
