Information is readily available today. A few searches can provide us with an explanation of a concept, model, or theory. That doesn’t mean we understand how to apply them in business.

The gap often shows up when a decision is required. At that point, repeating what we’ve read is not enough. We need to weigh the circumstances, constraints, and consequences for the people who will carry out that decision.

Understanding doesn’t have to provide the exact answer right away. It helps us ask better questions, recognize what we’re missing, and see when a known rule doesn’t apply to a specific situation.

That is why I consider what a person does with what they know to be more important than how much theory they can cite. Knowledge should be tested through actions, and actions through their consequences.
