The pressure to respond immediately is not always a good reason to decide immediately. Sometimes it takes a few minutes or another conversation to distinguish between the urgency of the problem and the urgency of someone else’s demand.

When we step back from the noise, we can see more clearly what we know, what we’re missing, and who will bear the consequences. This doesn’t require perfect conditions for thinking, but rather enough space so that we don’t mistake an impulse for a decision.

Sometimes delay is costly. So the real question isn’t whether we’re quick or slow, but whether we have good reason to act and whether we know what we’ll do if our judgment is wrong.

Calmness can help us decide more carefully. It does not guarantee that we will be right.
