When someone gets in touch only when it suits them, and our needs are persistently left aside, it is worth opening a conversation about the relationship. We don't have to guess how much we mean to them to notice what's repeating.
We can say what we are missing and what kind of agreement we expect. The other person has the right to be unable or unwilling to offer it. We have the right to change our participation according to that answer.
Feigned indifference often only prolongs the ambiguity. It is more useful to set a limit that we can maintain. The relationship is not improved by constantly proving one's own worth, but by the willingness of both parties to participate in it.
