We easily carry confidence from an area we know into one we do not understand well enough. Then we miss the fact that we still need to understand concepts, circumstances and the way in which the conclusion is checked.
Admitting that we don't know something can open up a better conversation. Instead of a ready answer, we can ask how the other person arrives at their assessment and what we would have to study ourselves.
Ignorance is not an advantage in itself. The advantage is the procedure that follows from it: checking, learning and talking with people who have relevant experience. Thus, an unknown area becomes something we can approach seriously, without pretending that we already understand it.
