A large number of acquaintances tells us little about how much room we have for an honest conversation. Sometimes it matters more to know whom we can bring a dilemma to and receive an answer that is more than polite agreement.
Such relationships require reciprocity and time. We cannot use them only when we need a recommendation or support. It matters to understand the other person's responsibilities, listen to their questions, and respect their boundaries too.
A reliable circle of people need not close the door to new encounters. It can provide a steadier foundation as we meet different perspectives. Support is useful when it helps us make our own decision, with a friend's willingness to disagree with us sometimes.
