It’s easy to wait for big opportunities. It’s harder to finish the small tasks that are already right in front of us: returning a call, sending a promised email, finalizing a proposal, or setting aside an hour for something we keep putting off.
None of these tasks on its own will change your career. But when we persistently put them off, people don’t know if they can count on us, and our ideas remain just that—ideas.
Discipline is no guarantee of success. Circumstances, knowledge, money, other people, and events we can’t predict also matter. Still, we can distinguish between what’s beyond our control and the tasks we can complete today.
Before we conclude that we’re missing out on a great opportunity, it’s worth taking a look at what’s been left unfinished for weeks. Perhaps the next step lies right there.
