After several bad outcomes, it can be difficult to start something new. One event begins to seem like proof of who we are, rather than the result of certain circumstances and decisions.
Failure can have serious consequences and there is no need to present it as a gift. However, we can try to distinguish what was under our control, what we overlooked and what should be set differently.
A lesson only occurs when that understanding affects the next action. Sometimes it is reasonable to try again, and sometimes to change the goal or wait. None of those choices need be the final judgment on our ability.
