A result can look good while the resources that make it possible are being depleted faster than we replenish them. Equipment is not maintained, knowledge remains with one person, and the team constantly makes up for a shortage of time.
This way of working can temporarily increase revenue while making the next job harder. An assessment of success should therefore include the state of our capacity: what needs repairing, learning, and organising so that we can continue.
Investing in maintenance is not merely a question of this month's costs. It preserves the ability to deliver in the future. A business is steadier when some of the result is set aside for the people and resources without which we cannot repeat it.
