The candidate may deviate from the image that we have previously associated with a specific role. Appearance, way of speaking or origin can then take the place of the question of what a person can really do.
A fairer assessment requires clear criteria and the opportunity to demonstrate ability. It is important to distinguish the real job requirement from the habit of choosing someone who resembles a predecessor.
This does not mean that every rejected candidate has hidden extraordinary talent. It means that the decision should have an explanation that corresponds to the task. People deserve to have their work and preparation seen before a conclusion based on an image they supposedly don't belong in.
