The first answer to a problem can seem convincing because it is familiar. We connect it with earlier experience and only later look for reasons to confirm what we have already decided.
For an important choice, it helps to write down the assumption and check what would contradict it. What information do we still lack? How would someone without our interest in the decision succeeding describe the same situation?
Slowing down is not necessary for every small task. It is worthwhile where a mistaken conclusion leaves serious consequences. A reasonable check can preserve good intuition while removing confidence gained simply because the story sounded familiar.
