A team can reliably carry out tasks that no longer contribute to an important goal. Deadlines are met and reports arrive, while the question of whom the work benefits remains outside the conversation.

Leadership and organisation therefore need to be connected. We need to know how we do the work, but also keep checking why we do it. A change in the user's needs can make an earlier process unnecessary or insufficient.

A manager should raise that question before asking people for even greater efficiency. If the direction needs changing, the decision needs explaining and the tasks adjusting. Work done well has greater value when we know what it serves.
